    Walter G. McLeod, age 89, passed away peacefully April 19, 2004 at his home in Poteet, TX. He was born in Jackson, AL on October 19, 1914. He married Anne Cordelia Breckenridge in Birmingham, AL on July 13, 1940. Walter is survived by his children, Bobbie McLeod Teska of San Antonio, Walter Grey McLeod, Jr. and wife Linda of Austin, Ron Cannady McLeod of Austin, and Betsy McLeod Atkins of San Antonio; sisters, Mary Leila McLeod and Catherine Gaynor McLeod of Jackson, AL; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. For the last two and one-half years of his life, Chaplain McLeod was cared for by his loving granddaughter, Heather Atkins Stewart. Walter was preceded in death by his wife, Anne; son, David McNeel McLeod; father and mother, Henry Marvin McLeod and Helen Lucile Cannady; his brothers and sisters. Chaplain McLeod received degrees from Birmingham Southern College, Birmingham, AL and Duke University, Durham, NC. On October 28, 1942, he entered the U.S. Army. In the course of his duty, he served as Post Chaplain in Yokohama, Japan; Post Chaplain, United States Military Academy, West Point; 5th U.S. Army Chaplain, Fort Sheridan, IL; and Post Chaplain, Fort Sam Houston, TX, among other assignments prior to his retirement in 1970. He was awarded the American Campaign Medal, European-African-Middle East Medal, WW II Victory Medal, Army of Occupation Medal (Japan), Korean Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal, Bronze Star Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Republic of Korea Presidential Unit Citation, Army Commendation Medal, and Legion of Merit. Among the civilian parishes Chaplain McLeod served were Oak Chapel, Methodist Church, Silver Spring, Maryland; Walter Reed Army Hospital, Washington, DC; and Somerset United Methodist Church, Somerset, TX. Visitation 1:00-3:00 P.M., Thursday, April 22, 2004 at Tri-City Funeral Home, Jourdanton, TX. Services 10:00 A.M., Friday, April 23, 2004 at Poteet United Methodist Church. Graveside Services at 1:30 P.M., at Fort Sam Houston, TX. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society. Tri-City Funeral Home.
