J. C. BRASFIELD, grocer, liveryman and farmer, was born in Dresden, Tenn., on the 12th of October, 1863. His father, A. Coke Brasfield, was born in North Carolina in 1820, and was a farmer and trader by occupation. He came to Tennessee in his youth, with his father, Caleb Brasfield, and after his marriage with Ruth A. Bondurant, he located in Dresden. He was constable of the Seventh District for six or seven years, and made an efficient officer. His wife was of German descent, born in Dresden in 1839, and died in 1874. Our subject is the youngest and the only living one of their five children. He attended school at Dresden, and at the age of sixteen, hired out as a clerk in a dry goods and grocery store of J. W. Moran, and remained with him about two years. He then clerked for A. P. White eight or nine months, and afterward worked for R. N. Irvine two months. In 1882 he and Mr. Irvine established a livery and feed stable, and for one year the firm was known as Irvine & Brasfield. In 1883 Mr.V. G. Brasfield bought Mr. Irvine's interest and the most of the time until nearly up to 1885, the firm was Brasfield & Brasfield. Our subject then purchased his grocery store and has been successfully engaged in that business. In August, 1885, he and Dr. B. D. Blakemore established a livery and feed stable and are doing well financially. He owns 685 acres of land and some town property. August 19, 1882, he and Valeria C. Brazelton were united in marriage. They have one child - Allen H. Mrs. Brasfield was born in Dresden, in May, 1866, and is a member of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church. Mr. Brasfield is a Democrat, and cast his first presidential vote for Grover Cleveland. He belongs to the 1. 0. 0. F.

105 Huntsville, AL - 14 year old Andy Brasfield died Thursday afternoon after being hit by a vehicle Wednesday night. The prayer vigil for the Huntsville teenager was held at 9 Thursday night. It was held at Monte Sano United Methodist Church. Dozens of people attended. It was held outside on the church's prayer path. The youth group helped organize the service to remember their friend and pray for the family. Andy was a freshman at Huntsville High School. In his 14 years, he made an impact on his classmates and the community. Friends say he will always be remembered for his positive attitude and good humor. Walker Finnell and Andy Brasfield met 3 years ago. They quickly became best buds. “I first met him in the 6th grade and I thought he was hilarious and would always make me laugh," said Walker Finnell. They hung out at school and at each other's homes. “We'd come over here and go over to other friends’ homes, play football, basketball, regular kid teenage stuff," said Walker Finnell. Walker's mother says Andy was always the life of the party. "There's Andy right there in the picture, in the middle of everybody all the way around. And that's the way everybody always wanted to be. Everybody just loved Andy and wanted to be around him all the time. So every time Andy was here, all the kids, young and old, wanted to be here," said Debbie Finnell, a friend of the Brasfield family and mother of Walker.

Andy Brasfield’s life was taken early. Police say he was crossing the street at Whitesburg and Noble drive around 10 pm Wednesday when he was hit by an SUV. Finnell says Brasfield and a couple of his friends were trying to cross the street to the shell gas station. Brasfield was taken to Huntsville hospital, where he passed away. He's the son of a well-known family in Huntsville. His father, Billy Brasfield, worked in local TV and radio under the name Kris Kelly. “His parents are 2 of the sweetest people that I've ever met and my heart just goes out to them for losing him," said Debbie Brasfield. “I’m sad. We're going to miss him a lot. Everybody is,” said Walker Finnell. According to police as of Thursday night no charges have been filed against the driver of the SUV.

HUNTSVILLE, AL - A teenager has died after being hit by a vehicle late Wednesday night. Huntsville Police say Andy Brasfield was hit by a Jeep just after 10 p.m.

Officers who were on the scene say Brasfield, 14, was walking with a group of friends across Whitesburg Drive, at Noble Drive, just south of the Airport Road intersection when the vehicle struck him. They were going to a convenience store to get something to drink. He was rushed to Huntsville Hospital, where he died Thursday morning surrounded by family and friends. Dozens of people formed a prayer circle in front of Monte Sano United Methodist Church Thursday night, sharing their grief and memories. Children from youth groups around Huntsville organized the vigil. They remembered Andy by reciting poems and scripture and sharing stories about the 14-year-old. "I think it was good for everybody. They got to just be together. It's just been a hard, long day, and I think it let people just kind of share with each other and be with each other and work through this together," said Kenny Creel, who attended the vigil and knew Andy very well. The ceremony was meant to lighten the load of sudden and heavy grief and pay special honor to a well-loved boy these people and others will sorely miss. Brasfield was a student at Huntsville High School. He was also an organ donor. Andy is the youngest son of Billy and Donna Brasfield. The family is well known in the Huntsville community. Billy has worked in local radio and television under the name 'Kris Kelly.' He also works as a DJ with Kris Kelly Entertainment. The Brasfield family is one of little people with big smiles and even bigger personalities. 14-year-old Andy Brasfield was the youngest. "Dynamite comes in small packages. You know, he was very small in stature, but oh my gosh. He exuded this incredible personality," said Mike Chappell, Andy's drama teacher at Huntsville High School. He learned Thursday morning about Wednesday's accident. "His friends say that they thought that he had crossed the road and he didn't make it in time, and he was hit. It's just tragic," said Chappell. The drama teacher was there when Andy was pronounced dead this morning at Huntsville Hospital, and he was surprised by the strength of Andy's older brother. Chappell said, "Jake was saying this morning at the hospital, 'Don't cry. He's in a better place.'" It's a loss the teacher said is felt around the school ... specifically in the drama department, where he was planning Andy's debut in theatre in their play "The Wedding Singer." "I saw such potential in him, and the last thing I said to him was 'You're gonna be on stage,' and he said 'Ok.' And we actually talked about some parts that he would do," said Chappell. Investigators say they don't expect to file charges against the driver at this time. Many of us at WHNT NEWS 19 know the Brasfield family. We offer our most sincere condolences for their loss.

109 Need information on my grandfather William Allen SHELTON born Nov 6, 1869, died June 20, 1955 in MS. Married abt 1905 in West TN (probably Dyer Co) to Anna Brasfield. However in 1910 census I see this was his second marriage (I have no info on first marriage). I believe his parents are the Robert & Leatha SHELTON in 1880 Coffee Co census. Known siblings of William are Tom and James. Any info appreciated. Trish Kilby -- 23716 Long Arrow Lane, Conifer, CO 80433 trishtrash@mstg.net Submitted on Thu Feb 19 1998 BRASFIELD Anna

She is identified in the 1860 Census, Elm, Putnam County as Po. My original source, her grandmother, Julia Wilson Brasfield, stated "Ann Poetta, born June 1857, died Nov. 1875." Pleasant Home Cemetery records show she died 4 May 1875 - 18 yrs., 4 mos., 25 days which means she would have been born 9 Dec. 1856. (I've also seen her name as Poe and Ann). I am sure all the children of James M. and Narcissa were born in Putnam Co. (although I don't have any actual documentation). - Judy Williams

Description: Hey, Brett Brown Brasfield was my maternal grandfather. His living daughter, Frances Brasfield told me she has never heard any information in her life about her father being married to Gertrude Gray before he married my grandmother, Lurlia Ashworth. I noticed Gertrude has two living children. Do you know if their father is supposedly Brett Brown Brasfield? If so, could you ask them to contact me. I would love to know the real story. Do you know where the information came from reflecting the marriage between Brett and Gertrude?
Thanks for all your help and research.

137 Michael ..

In case you don't remember me , and I would be surprised if you did, I am Buel Brasfield's son, one of Fayette's grandsons.
I have emailed you before about information concerning our side of the Brasfield legacy.
I wanted to let you know what I have discovered.
Sarah Snow's father is listed as Jesse Snow which, of course, is correct. Jesse's wife's name is Julie Vina Smith and her mother is Vina Franklin.
Many members of our family have a skin condition called Epidermalisist Bolosa, which causes blistering even with minor irratation. After tracing back to where this condition originated, we discovered it stems back to Vina Franklin.
Vina passed it to Julie ..
Julie to Sarah ..
Sarah to Buel ..
Buel to me ..
There are others that have it but I am just telling you my direct chain.
I am working on a family history congromeration for my kids so I'll be on this website quite often.
I hope this information is helpful.

146 Casper Lafayette Brasfield was born June 23, 1917 as the seventh of eight children to Joseph Arthur Brasfield and Ora Beulah Ausborn Brasfield. He enlisted and served in the US Army during World War II in the 79th Division, 314 Regiment, 2nd Battalion, H Company. Battles and campaigns included Normandy, Northern France and Central Europe. He received many decorations and citations including ATO Medal, EAMETO Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Purple Heart Medal with one OLC, Dist Unit Badge and World War II Victory Medal. While overseas during the war, he learned of his fathers passing in 1944 by a letter from his oldest sister, Fleta. He received an Honorable Discharge from the Army on December 19, 1945 and returned to his home in Monroe County, Mississippi.

He worked in the lumber industry with Gilmore Puckett Lumber Company until heart problems forced him to retire. He never stopped working though. He could build anything if it involved a hammer and piece of lumber. He raised four children and was very proud of them all. He enjoyed his three granddaughters and one grandson as well. Two more grandchildren, as well as three great-grandchilden have come along since Daddy's passing, but there is no doubt he would have been entertained by them also.

Daddy loved to talk about the War and share his experiences. Some of Daddy and Mama's most enjoyable times were spent organizing, planning and attending army reunions all over the United States as well as hosting smaller reunions at their home in Amory with 8 or 10 couples who lived nearby in neighboring states. My siblings and I also enjoyed helping with the reunions and listening to all the stories.

One Saturday night Daddy was suffering from an excruciating head ache. Mama called the ambulance to take him to the hospital. Daddy was suffering from a subarachnoid hemorrhage, which evidentially ruptured in the ambulance on the way to the hospital. Daddy died one week later October 10, 1992 in the Intensive Care Unit at Gilmore Memorial Hospital in Amory, Mississippi.

Thank you Daddy for being you. You were a great man and I was always so proud to call you Daddy. I miss you everyday. Your daughter, Patricia Elaine Brasfield Simmons.
