Subject: "Boob" Brasfield

I worked with the Brasfield family when they were putting on "Toby" comedies in 1934-35 and have wondered what happened to all their family members. I cannot remember his wife's name, but their daughter was Bonnie. I have seen the page on his brother Rod, but never met him although I can remember him talking about Rod. Boob had a photo album and he would show us pictures of the billboards in NY where he had been appearing with some notable actors. Sincerely, TLM

Mr. Morgan -

Thank you very much for writing and for sending the picture of Bonnie. I think that "Boob" was also known as "Uncle Cyp" and was married to Neva Greevi (or Green). I don't have any other information on his family. Do you know anything else about Bonnie?

Michael: No not really. That is why I contacted your site in hopes it would have something on them. I was stage manager in the theatre they played in during the middle 30's I vaguely recalled his wife being Neva, but was not sure. Thayer Roberts was with them and I saw Thayer in New Orleans after WW-II but did not get a chance to talk to him. He was with Sigmond Rhomberg in a musicale " The Desert Song" in N.O. About the only comment I remember him saying was "Too bad what happened to Bonnie" If you do run across any more info please give me a copy. Sincerely. TLM

Leonard BRASFIELD, Jr. I was born in Prince William Co., Va., a few miles northwest of what is since known as the Bull Run Battle ground, on the first day of June, 1800. I was left an orphan boy in 1816, and traveled to Kentucky with an orphan brother in 1818. I removed from Woodford Co., Ky., to Clay Co., Mo., in the fall of 1830. I have paid tax and worked roads forty years in Clay Co. I don't owe at this time any man a dollar. I formerly voted the Whig ticket, but I am now disfranchised.

Here's the 1850 census information for Leontine Brasfield-Penny:
US Census, 1850 - All Townships, Kemper Co., MS, HH952, Roll 374, Book 1, Pg. 203b, Image #130. "Mrs. Penny" (age 33, female, born in NC) is found on this census. She is shown only as "Mrs. Penny" with no given name listed. Also found in the household are the following children: John Penny (age 12, male, born in AL), Francis (age 10, born in AL) and Martha (age 8, born in AL). [Note: Alexander Penny is not shown with the family on this census. It is possible that he died between the 1840 census and the 1850 census. Living next door in HH941 is the family of John B. Brasfield, the brother of Leontine Brasfield-Penny, and his family.] [Note: Ron Hesdorff, grt-grt-grt-grandson of Leontine Penny, found this missing piece to our census puzzle on October 8, 2003.]

415 MARCH 21, 1919 A Very Sad Death Mrs. Lessie Brasfield Haynes, wife of Shearon L. Haynes, died of uremic poisoning Sunday, March 16, at 4 p. m. She was stricken last Wednesday and medical aid could not check the poisonous disease. She suffered intensely but bore it with patience. Her parents, Mr. and Mrs. John A. Brasfield, of Martin, were at her bedside from Thursday until the end came. Mrs. Haynes became a mother about ten days before the uremic attack, but had gotten along finely. The deceased and Shearon Haynes were married July 21, 1914. Two children were born. She was 21 years of age. She was a member of the Methodist church, but at the age of 15 years was baptized into the Christian church. She was so recently one of Selmer's most vivacious and attractive girls that we hardly realize her as a mother. She was beloved by all, and a most devoted mother and wife. Unusual ties seemed always to bind her and her father in life which seemed cruel to break. Funeral services were held at the Methodist church Monday afternoon at 1 o'clock, a very large crowd of relatives and friends attending the services which were conducted by the pastor, Rev. R. W. Newsom, assisted by Rev. Butler and Wallace. The floral offerings bespoke the kindness and love of her friends. The stricken husband has the most sincere sympathy of all in leaving him alone with two babies to tenderly care for. He is blessed however with his own parents and the parents of his sainted wife, who as far as love and attentive care can allay his grief, will be lavished upon him. The Independent extends its most sincere condolence. to the bereaved families. http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~mcnairytn/newspaper/selmernews1919.htm BRASFIELD Lessie Gertrude

447 Michael...
No problem. Yes, those are my parents. I think I've seen the "Brasfield Genealogy" book and posed the question (about grandma Bunn's middle name) to both my mother and my aunt. They both contend her name was Zenona. I have her marriage license to my grandfather and it lists her middle name as Genonia. I also think the "History of Monroe County" lists it as Senoma (with an 'm'). All I remember is that we heard her called Onie as we were growing up. I do not think I have any documentation with Zenona.

Just as a clarification, my father's real name was Bannie, he was named after a family friend Bannie Schumpert. And my mother's full name is Velma Ann Lovelace.

Be my guest with the pictures on my website.

Michael Brasfield wrote:

Barry - Sorry to be a pest, but are you the son of Bennie & Velma Bunn? Also, the published "Brasfield Genealogy" book shows your grandmother as Martha Senona Brasfield. Middle name spelled with an "S" rather than a "Z", and nick names of Onie or Manonie. Before I change my files, I wanted to confirm that the middle name was spelled with a "Z". Thanks again. Also a favor to ask - may I have permission to download Martha's photo and use it on my web site with appropriate credit to you and your family web site? Mike

Michael...
Glad you received it ok.

Yes, I am related to him. My grandmother was Martha Z. Brasfield daughter of Lafayette Brasfield and Betty Massengale. She was one of Joe's sisters. She married William Rueben Bunn. If you're interested you could check out www.bunncrib.50megs.com
I have some pictures of her and William as well as the rest of the Bunns.

After reading the will, I see that it was for Joseph Arthur Brasfield who was born 9/18/1879. He married Ora Buelah Ausborn on 10/9/1900. Are you any relation? Thanks again.
