  • Notes
    • Michael, In the papers of John William Boatman who was my wife's gggrandfather were these two obituaries. ((((((( Died - Boatman- On Thursday March 13, 1884 at the residence of his son-in-law, Henry Boatman, in his 78th year. The funeral services were held at the Bower school house in Clayton township and was conducted by Rev. A. B. Buckner. A large number of friends and relatives met to pay this last act of solemn respect and tribute to the aged dead. After the conclusion of the obsequis the remains were taken to be sent to Knox County, Ill., the former home of the dead. Deceased was born June 11, 1806, in Highland Co., Ohio. He came to this county in 1874. Joined the M. E. church in 1843 of which he was a steadfast and consistent member up to the time when the great Father called him higher. Children and relatives and a host of friends mourn his taking off, butfind consolation in the fact that their loss is his eternal gain. )))) ((( Died, at his residence in Riverton, Fremont County, Iowa, Jan. 6th,1885, of Typhoid Pneumonia, Mr. George Boatman, aged 53 years and 20 days. His remains were consigned to the Riverton cemetery by the side of his little daughter, who preceded him about five years ago. He leaves a wife and one little boy, Frankie by name, aged seven years. Mr. Boatman was born in Highland County, Ohio, and came to this county about eight years ago, where he resided for about four years, from whence he removed to Riverton, where he remained until his death, working at the wagon-maker's trade until the day of his sickness, which lasted one week, during which time he was a great, though patient sufferer. He was converted and united with the M. E. Church about one year ago under the pastorate of Rev. E. E. Lymer, by whom his funeral sermon was preached from the very appropriate text " Like as a father pitieth his children, so the Lord pitieth them that fear him." He was greatly respected by all with whom he was acquainted, and died as he had lived with all men, in great peace. Thus passing over the swellings of the Jordan to join his little daughter on the shining banks beyond.)))) The dates for Henry would be : b. Jun. 11, 1806 and d. Mar 13, 1884. George's dates would be :b. Dec 17, 1831 and d. Jun. 6, 1885. It is hard for me , as an Ohio boy, to decide what newspapers these obits were in or any connections to the places in Iowa. I have: John William Boatman b. Jan 29, 1843 and d. Oct 11, 1924, married Mary Elizabeth Williamson, b. Oct 6, 1845 and d. Mar. 6, 1885. ( I think they were married in Knox County, IL)They had two boys: Archie Arthur, b. Aug 30, 1870 in IL and a Cyde Lee, b. Mar. 20, 1878. Cyde died Nov. 15, 1887 and (the story is) Archie took Clyde as a middle name to honor his deceased brother. All later references to Archie are: Archie Clde Boatman. In Archies obituary it says he was a native of Galesburg, Il. Archie married Gertrude Medora Huntington who was born in Wisconsin in 1874. They had a daughter: Ferne Huntington Baotman who was born in 1894 in Creston, Iowa. They eventually settled in Atlanta where both Archie and Medora are buried. Ferne married a Leonard Lamb and had several children including Mary Jane who is my wife's mother. My questions to you are: Do any of the people, locations, or dates ( particularly from the two obits) ring a bell??? Does the Creston, Iowa connection for Archie, Medora, and Ferne mean anything to you? Does the Huntington connection mean anything to you? I have a STRONG feeling that we are talking about the same family !!!!!! Your page on Rootsweb says 1831 for John's birth but... could that be incorrect? Any more info or insights would be greatly appreciated. Anxiously awaiting your reply....... Warmest regards to my wife's....... cousin???? Rick srbrewer@voyager.net
