- James F. Brassfield, Sr., age 80, of Baxter, KY, passed from this life, on Monday, April 16, 2012, at the Harlan Nursing Home following an extended illness. James was born at Highsplint, KY, on April 26, 1931, to W.L. and Margaret Short Brassfield and had lived in Harlan most of his life.
James was a coal miner retired from the International Harvester in Benham, KY. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force and served in the Korean War. He was a member of the VFW, DAV, the Masons and Eastern Star (Harlan Lodge), as well as the UMWA. He was also a member of the First Baptist Church at Loyall, Ky.
Along with his parents, James was preceded in death by two wives, Lenora Cross Brassfield and Pauline Robbins Brassfield; a sister, Juanita Venable; and two brothers, Bill and Roland Brassfield.
He is survived by two children, Marchelle Gray and husband, Jerry, of Richmond; and James "Jimbo" Brassfield, Jr., and wife, Cindy, of Baxter; a sister, Elvenia Earles and husband, Charles, of Melvindale, MI; and three brothers, W.L Brassfield and wife, Joey, of Harlan; Fred Brassfield of Lexington and Don Brassfield, also of Lexington; four grandchildren, James Allan Brassfield, Chrissie Brassfield Freeman, Garrison Gray and Gabrielle Gray; and one great-grandchild- Jocelyn Freeman.
Visitation will be Wednesday, April 18, from 5:00-7:00 P.M. in the chapel of the Harlan Funeral Home with funeral services beginning at 7:00 P.M. Brother Glenn Durham will officiate.
Burial will be Thursday, 10:00 A.M. at Resthaven Cemetery, Keith, KY, with military honors presented by the Harlan Honor Guard. Family and friends are asked to gather at the cemetery just prior to the graveside service.
Harlan Honor Guard will serve as casket bearers.
