| 10573 | September 07, 2010 Services for LaBelle McAfee, 89, Overton, are scheduled for 2 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 8, at the Overton Missionary Baptist Church with Revs Bryan Ethridge, Wade Duck, and Atwell Hankins officiating. Burial will be in Overton City Cemetery under the direction of Cottle-Pearson Funeral Home, Overton. Mrs. McAfee died Friday, Sept. 3, 2010, in Longview. She was born Nov. 17, 1920, in Arp to the late John and Nellie Dickerson Brasfield and lived all her life in the Arp and Overton area. She married Claude O. McAfee March 2, 1940, in Overton. For 10 years, she worked for Hall-Barrett Drug Store. Mrs. McAfee had also worked as a bookkeeper for George Herron Contractors, and was a longtime staff member at Cottle-Pearson Funeral Home. She was an active member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Hall Brothers VFW Post #9185, Overton. Mrs. McAfee was a member of the Overton Missionary Baptist Church, where she served as bookkeeper. She was a marvelous cook and loved to share with her many friends and family. She was a wonderful artist and enjoyed making ceramics and crocheting. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and friend to all who knew her. She was preceded in death by a son, Claude Wesley McAfee on March 1, 1970; as well as by her brothers and sisters, J. W. Brasfield, J. C. Brasfield, Grady Paul Brasfield, Ruby Lee Hanson, Loraine Brasfield, Nell Copeland, Dixie Walker and Bonnie Richardson. Survivors include her devoted husband of 70 years, Claude O. McAfee of Overton; two daughters and sons-in-law, Elsie and Larry Hollis of Sweeney and Betty and Jerry Clark of Brownsville; six grandchildren, Bobby Pearson, Teri Mayfield, Tammy Mullins, Patrick Clark, Scott Hollis and Laura Vineyard; 12 great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandchild; numerous nieces and nephews; and a host of friends. Pallbearers will be grandsons, Jerry Mayfield, Lee Mayfield, Colby Pearson, Johnathan Pearson, Bobby Pearson, Patrick Clark and Jason Clark. "Bud" Brassfield, 85, of Sergeant Bluff died Sunday, Nov. 12, 2006, at his residence, surrounded by his wife, Rita, and daughters, following a two month bout with cancer. Services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Salix, Iowa, with the Rev. Patrick O'Kane officiating. The American Legion Post 662 will stand an honor guard at the church. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery, with military rites conducted by the American Legion George Nelson Post 662 of Sergeant Bluff. Visitation with the family present will be 6 to 8 p.m. today, with a parish vigil service at 7 p.m., at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Christy-Smith Larkin Northside Chapel in Sioux City. Bud was born July 26, 1921, in Bronson, Iowa, the youngest of four children born to E.J. and Mary (Steinhofer) Brassfield. He attended school in Luton, Iowa. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, from 1942 to 1945. He married Rita M. O'Meara on Aug. 7, 1946, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Salix. He farmed in Bronson and later in Salix. He also worked during the winter months at the air base. In 1967, he became a state employee with the Iowa Air National Guard, but he continued to farm. He retired in 1984 as a state employee. He enjoyed taking his grandchildren and great-grandchildren on tractor rides. He liked cooking, playing cards, socializing and helping his neighbors and friends. He was known for his hospitality, generosity, sense of humor and loyalty. He will be missed and remembered by his family, life long friends, American Legion comrades, coffee buddies and neighbors as a caring and kind man. He was a 60 year member of the American Legion Post 662 of Sergeant Bluff. He served as the first vice commander for three years. He was instrumental in raising funds for the new legion building and involved in erecting the Veterans Memorial in Sergeant Bluff. He was the first to volunteer for any project or community development. "All gave some, some gave all," he gave all. Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Rita M. Brassfield of Sergeant Bluff; four daughters, Jeanne and her husband, Jack Basye of Scottsdale, Ariz., Mary and her husband, Larry Johnson of Sloan, Iowa, Debbie Miller of Omaha and Lori and her husband, Doug Stone of Sioux City; seven grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren; two great-grandchildren; four great-stepgrandchildren; Linda Nordstrom (adopted daughter) of Sloan; and a sister, Vi Hough of Grants Pass, Ore. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Everett "Rusty" Brassfield; and a sister, Ileen Brassfield. Pallbearers will be Adam Johnson, Matt Johnson, Denny, Jerry, Jeff and Bob Brouillette. Wilton married LaVina Bernice Dolloff on July 11, 1969 in Denver City. He worked for Well-Co for 21 years before his retirement in 1999. He is preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Jo Evelyn Baldwin and Betty Joyce Bunch; a brother, Donald Ray Brassfield. Wilton was a quiet, gentle, loving and caring family man with a big heart. He will truly be missed. | 10589 | Sgt. Michael J. Knapp was an amazing father, husband, brother, and son who loved his family and God. He was always a great leader and teacher to all of his fellow soldiers. Michael and his wife, Abby, were married in October 2007 and moved to Ft. Lewis, Wash., in March 2010 after he joined Active Duty Army. They had their daughter, Kinsley Payton was born on Aug. 1, 2011 - she was 9 weeks early weighing in at 3 lbs. 6 oz. - their miracle baby. Mike could not wait to be a father and loved Miss Kinsley so much. He deployed to Asadabad, Afghanistan, on Nov. 14, 2011, with the 17th Fires Brigade. While deployed, Mike watched his daughter grow up on Skype until May 18, 2012, when he was killed in action. He died of wounds suffered when enemy forces attacked their unit with a rocket. His military honors include A Bronze Star Medal, a Purple Heart, 2 Army Commendation Medals, 2 Army Achievement Medals, an Army Good Conduct Medal, Army Reserve Components Achievement Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Kosovo Campaign Medal with Bronze Service Star, Afghanistan Campaign Medal with Bronze Star, 3 Iraq Campaign Medals with Bronze Stars, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, 2 Armed Forces Reserve Medals with M Device, Noncommissioned Officers Professional Development Ribbon, Army Service Ribbon, 3 Overseas Service Ribbons, 2 NATO Medals Kosovo, Combat Action Badge, 4 Overseas Service Bars, and a Louisiana Emergency Service Ribbon and Medal. Michael is a man of God who will be missed dearly. We are keeping peace in knowing that he is with our Lord and Savior today. He is survived by his wife, Abby Dyan (Brassfield) Knapp, 27, of Overland Park; daughter, Kinsley Payton Knapp, 9 months; his mother, Sandra Knapp of Overland Park; sister, Wendy Knapp of Overland Park; grandfather, John Knapp of Bucyrus, Kansas; and his in-laws, Tom and Marla Brassfield of Overland Park along with Abby's siblings, Amy Knapp, Clay Brassfield, and Casey Brassfield. There will be a visitation to honor Michael from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, May 28, at Legacy Christian Church, 10150 Antioch Rd., Overland Park, Kan.
