| 1301 | Army, My dad died when I was 8 years old and we have very little information about him-- we know he inducted at Ft. Oglethorpe in March 1943 as a radio operator (MOS 740), arrived in Europe on November 17, 1944 and was a POW from the date of his injury on December 20, 1944 until he was liberated on April 13, 1945. He left Europe on May 2 and arrived in the US on May 12, 1945. He apparently was then assigned to Battery A, 576th Field Artillery Batallion at Ft. Bragg, NC until his discharge on November 23, 1945. | 1302 | Arnold Arthur Matt, age 86, passed away peacefully at his home in New Underwood with family at his side on Wednesday, July 4, 2012. He lived, loved, and laughed well. Arnold was born September 22, 1925, in a farm house to Joseph and Selma Martinson Matt in the Elk Vale Community north of Rapid City, SD. In 1928, he moved with his parents and siblings, Gladys and Julius to his mother's homestead in the Boneita Springs area close to the Belle Fourche River. His brother, Henry was born in 1933. Arnold received his elementary education at four different schools, where he had to board with other families that lived closer to the schools. His boyhood was spent helping with chores, swimming in the river, hunting and trapping, as well as inventing things to make work and fun easier. When Arnold was 17, he bought land from Ole Olson and dug a well on it by hand. He worked on ranches and farms. Soon after he leased the Ole Olson home place and moved in there. In 1948, on February 14, Arnold married Elsie Boydston Arneson at the home of her sister and brother-in-law, Ardis and Justin Speer. They made their home on the Olson place until 1949, when they moved a house onto their land on a basement that Arnold dug with the help of others. Additional buildings were added for poultry, hogs, sheep, cattle, etc. Arnold worked not only on farms and ranches, but also on the missile sites. His life revolved around the Boneita Springs community, where he was president of the School Board in District #7 for 11 years. He helped with the upkeep of the Boneita Springs School, and the Boneita Springs Church and Cemetery. Arnold received an appreciation trophy for his work in the community. He attended his children's activities at school and 4-H. He irrigated land that he leveled himself on the river bottom. Arnold farmed and ranched as well, with the help of his family. He helped his neighbors with branding, carpentry, harvesting, or whatever they needed help with, including witching for water with a just-right willow branch. Arnold chauffeured his children many times after they went to New Underwood to high school. He was a great and creative do-it-yourselfer. He loved finding all the things to collect for his museum. After his breathing limited his outdoor work, he leased the ranch to sons, Stanley and Kenny Matt, and started doing woodworking. He and Elsie sold his creations at craft shows and out of their home. In 2000, they began spending winters in their present home in New Underwood. In 2004, they moved in permanently and have enjoyed visiting and having friends and families stop in. As his health deteriorated, he became housebound, but still enjoyed company. Arnold was tall in stature and large in the hands, his laugh was loud and infectious, and would make people laugh who may not have even heard the joke! He was always quick to joke and tease. Preceding him in death were his parents; his sister, Gladys; her husband, Charles Brassfield; his brother, Julius; daughter-in-law, Vicki Matt; son-in-law, Wayne Bloom; grandsons, Justin Matt and Trent Matt; great-granddaughter, Maci Oyler; nephews, Dennis Matt and Allen Matt; and niece, Diana Matt-Gehrels; in-laws, Cecil and Alice Boydston, Ardis Speer, and Ruth Boydston. He leaves behind his wife of 64 years, Elsie; and nine children, Marion(Darlene)Matt, Cliff (Judy) Matt, Dixie (Dave) Oyler, Ron (Tonya) Matt, Stanley (Glenda) Matt, Kenny (Cindy) Matt, Marlene (Paul) Montoya, Beverly (Wade) Wootton, Bonnie (Steve) Yearous; 24 grandchildren; and 30 great-grandchildren. He also leaves his brother, Henry(Annette)Matt; in-laws Charles (Margaret) Boydston, Justin Speer, and Alys Matt. The viewing will be at Kirk Funeral Home, Rapid City, on Friday. Services will be held Saturday, July 7, 2012, at the Central Meade County Community Center at Union Center, SD, with Pastor Harold Delbridge officiating. Viewing will be for one hour before services. There will be catered lunch immediately following the services. Burial will be in the Boneita Springs Cemetery after the luncheon. | 1313 | ARTHUR DEAN BRAZFIELD, 46, died of injuries suffered in a train accident Feb. 3 on J Street in Marysville. Born in San Bernardino, Mr. Brazfield was a lifelong resident. He was a teamster for seven years. Mr. Brazfield belonged to Teamsters Union Local 63 in Rialto. He is survived by two sons, Arthur of New York and Eric of San Bernardino; six daughters, Cecilia, Christina, Deanna, Sabrina, Alicia and Tricia, all of San Bernardino; seven grandchildren; eight brothers, Michael of Yucaipa, Ray Gutierrez and Victor, both of Riverside, John Lemos of Devore, and Richard, Robert Rodriguez, David Gutierrez and John Gutierrez, all of San Bernardino; and three sisters, Terry Estrada of Maryland, and Rachel Estrada and Angie Estrada, both of San Bernardino. Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Funeraria Preciado Funeral Home in San Bernardino. Friends may call from 4 until 9 p.m. Tuesday at the mortuary. Brassfield, 60, of Gillett, Wis., formerly of Streator, died at 3:50 p.m. Monday, July 31, 2000, at the home of his sister, Eunice Arrington, 1704 N. Shabbona St., Streator. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. John's Lutheran Church in Pulcifer, Wis. The Rev. John Latch will officiate. Burial will be in St. John's Cemetery in Pulcifer. Serving as pallbearers will be his sons, Jonathan, Joel, Jody and Joshua Brassfield; a brother-in-law, James Arrington; and nephews, David Brassfield and Troy and Scott Arrington. Honorary pallbearers will be his daughter, Jessica Cam; nieces, Shawn Cox, Jamie Wisely, Debbie Marinello, Sally Krier, Susan Sherod, Jenny Danner, Rachel Butler and Lindsey Emery; and nephews, the Rev. James Sherod and Bradley Brassfield. Visitation will be 4-8 p.m. Wednesday at Hagi Funeral Home, Streator. A prayer service will be held at 7:30 p.m. Born Oct. 15, 1939, in Streator, he was the son of Everette and Margaret (Sedory) Brassfield. He married Jacqueline M. ``Jackie'' Lechman on Aug. 24, 1968, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Lisle. She survives in Gillett. Also surviving are sons, Jonathan (Jamie) Brassfield of Green Bay, Wis., Joel (Candy) Brassfield of Rushmore, Minn., and Jody (Tina) Brassfield and Joshua Brassfield, both of Worthington, Minn.; a daughter, Jessica (Mrs. Steve) Cam of Adrian, Minn.; one grandson; a brother, Eugene (Betty) Brassfield of Streator; and sisters, Marilyn (Mrs. Bill) Sherod of Weslaco, Texas, and Eunice (Mrs. James) Arrington of Streator. He was preceded in death by his parents. He served in the United States Army. He graduated from Ft. Lauderdale University in 1967, with a master of arts degree in business administration. He also graduated from Concordia Seminary in Springfield in 1972 with a master of divinity in theology. He served as vicar at Westport, Conn. He was an ordained Lutheran minister, serving as a clergyman in the LC-MS synod for 28 years. His pastorates included Siloam Springs, Ark.; Coventry, England; and Kenosha, Pulcifer, Green Valley and Clintonville, Wis. He served his last pastorate in Worthington, Minn., where he retired in 1999. He was a member of the Rotary Club. He was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Pulcifer, where he was on the Stewardship Board in the Minnesota South District. | 1345 | August 31, 2005 Goldie Margaret Von Salzen Goldie Margaret Von Salzen, 95, passed away peacefully, Friday, Aug. 26, 2005. Goldie was born on Dec. 22, 1909, in Stanwood, Wash., to Johanna and Andrew Deshler. She was raised in Tacoma and Ashford, Wash., graduating from Ashford High School in 1929. Meeting Louis Von Salzen of Ashford, they married in 1932, and resided in Ashford for 35 years. Upon his retirement, Louis and Goldie moved to Gig Harbor in 1965, where she has resided since. Goldie enjoyed participating and supporting her church, and many service and charitable organizations throughout the area. An eager adventurer, Goldie traveled extensively throughout the world, and at age 74, fulfilled her dream of walking on the Great Wall of China. Additionally, Goldie was an engaging conversationalist who followed current events, sports teams and sporting events. Having vivid recollections, she could tell spellbinding stories, in detail, of the historical events in the South Puget Sound region. She greatly enjoyed hearing and telling humorous stories and was known for her wit and sense of humor by her many friends throughout the region. Goldie is survived by her daughter, Joanne Ewing of Newcastle, Wash.; her granddaughter, Shirlyn Baskette of Richmond, British Columbia; and her great-granddaughter Johanna Carra Baskette. Her family wishes to express thanks and remembrances to her many friends and recent caregivers. Memorial Services will be held 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 2, 2005 at Haven of Rest in Gig Harbor. | 1347 | Austin (TX) American Statesman - February 19, 1879 Mr. David Browder, of Lee county, died of punomonia at Mrs.Robert's boarding house Monday night afte an illness of but four or five days. He was summoned here as a witness in the Federal Court and brough on the sickness that cost him his life by sleeping in a draft between two open windows. The wife and a brother and two or three citizens were with deceased during his last hours. The Masons followed the remains to the grave yesterday afternoon. Th poor woman who was brought hither from Lee county with four little children and her husband is left in utter destitution by the husband's death. He was a witness in some whisky case, was taken sick and the wife came to watch at his bedside. He died yesterday morning and was buried in the afternoon by the Masons.
