Survivors include sister and brother-in-law, Marticia and Wendell (Hap) Pitchford; sister, Audrey Burns; sister-in-law, Marilyn Brassfield, all of Hartford; sister and brother-in-law, Wanda and Don Moore of Fort Smith; brother-in-law, Harold Steele of Charleston, and a host of friends. Duke was last known to be living in Covington, Tennessee. He received his Juris Doctor in 1975 from the Cecil C. Humphreys School of Law at the then Memphis State University. He served in the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam War from 1969 to 1972, with overseas duty in the Philippines. He is survived by his wife Martha. Visitation will be Sunday from 5:30 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. at the First Methodist Church in Covington. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at the Church. The Service of Committal will be held at Sunset Cemetery in Dresden, Tennessee, at 3:30 p.m. Memorials should be sent to the First United Methodist Church of Covington, Dyersburg State Community College, or a charity of the donor's choice. A Covington attorney died Friday in a one-vehicle crash in Fayette County near the Tipton County line. Duke Harris Brasfield, 62, was driving a Chevrolet Suburban on Hendrick Road about 12:30 p.m. when the vehicle didn't stop at a "T" intersection with Sinai Drive, according to Mike Browning, a spokesman for the Tennessee Highway Patrol. The Suburban struck an embankment, went up a hill and caught fire at some point. Witnesses pulled Brasfield's body from the vehicle. A coroner will investigate whether Brasfield died while driving, rather than as a result of the accident. The crash site is south of Mason, between U.S. 70 and Interstate 40, and about 40 miles northeast of Downtown Memphis. Brasfield was the husband of 25th Judicial District Chancery Court Chancellor Martha Brasfield. He had been the Tipton County attorney since 1985 and also was attorney for the Covington Industrial Development Board, said Bruce Petty, budget and accounts director for county government. Born January 5, 1943, in Kansas City, Mo., to Earl and Annie Cofer Brasfield, he lived in this area for 21 years. Earl was a Riverside High School graduate and was a U.S. Army veteran. He retired from Printgraphics and was an upholsterer. Earl was a former member of the American Legion. He loved to fish and was a jokester and a great character. Survivors include his wife, Anna F. Marcum Brasfield to whom he was married April 20, 1972; son, Staff Sgt. Brandon Brasfield (wife Tami) of New Palestine, Ind.; daughters, Natalie Taylor of Sacramento, Calif., and Renia Moody (husband Aubrey) of Abington; grandchildren, Rick Moody, Nick Moody, Jesse Taylor, Ashley Taylor, Cage Brasfield and Steele Brasfield; brothers, Lyn Brasfield of Paramount, Calif., Frank Brasfield of Gallatin, Mo., and Lee Ray Brasfield of Riverside Calif.; sister, Velma Day of Riverside, Calif.; and many wonderful nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Bill and Raymond Brasfield. A funeral service will be held at 2 p. m. on Monday at First Christian Church, Stillwater, with the Revs. Owen Cayton and Jim Shields officiating. Strode Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. He was born on Feb. 13, 1929, in Chula, Mo., to Irena Lillis Boyer and Oscar Graves Brassfield. He married Shirley Mae Crow on July 25, 1950 in New Market, Iowa. He attended Northwestern Missouri University, Maryville, Mo., as a business major. While at college, Earl began a career in sales at a shoe store, later managed several department stores in Oklahoma City, then traveled as a sales representative for shoe companies and lastly, managed promotional campaigns for retail stores throughout the country. He retired from a sales career to begin managing property in Shreveport, La., and then Tulsa. He and Shirley retired to Stillwater, where Earl volunteered for area charities, Karmen Korner, Elite Repeat and the Habitat Restore.He was a staff sergeant in the Korean War, and received the United Nations Service Medal, Korean Service Medal and two Bronze Campaign Stars and the Army Occupation Medal (Japan). He is a member of First Christian Church of Stillwater and the Capitol Hill Lions Club of Oklahoma City.He was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, Bill, Henry, Forrest and Vernon; his sisters, Carrie, Edith, and Cora; and five infant brothers and sisters.He is survived by his wife, Shirley, of Stillwater; a son, John Brassfield and his wife Cheryl of Oklahoma City; and two daughters, Marla Day and her husband Dwight of Manhattan, Kan.; and Karen Lott and her husband Danny of Stillwater. | 3024 | Earl Harvey Brasfield Sr. died Thursday, Jan. 8, 2004, at River Region Medical Center. He was 82. A native of Okolona, Miss., Mr. Brasfield had lived in Vicksburg most of his life. He was a veteran of the Navy, Army and Mississippi National Guard, having served in World War II and Korea. He retired as a command sergeant major after 35 years of service. Mr. Brasfield was a civil engineer for the Mississippi River Commission with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for 30 years. He was a member of the American Legion, the VFW and Hawkins United Methodist Church. He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles Leroy and Edna Estelle Carson Brasfield; a daughter, Marian Gail Brasfield; three brothers and two sisters. Survivors include his wife, Peggy Findley Brasfield of Vicksburg; two sons, Buster Brasfield of Newport Richey, Fla., and Randy Brasfield of Vicksburg; three daughters, Beverly Roggencamp of Kansas City, Mo., Sharon Francingues of Vicksburg and Linda Randall of Slidell, La.; two brothers, Charles Brasfield of Vicksburg and Edgar Brasfield of Brandon; eight grandchildren; and a great-grandchild. Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Hawkins United Methodist Church with the Rev. Mitchell Hedgepeth officiating. Burial will follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery under the direction of Fisher Funeral Home. Visitation will be from 5 until 8 tonight at the funeral home and from 1 p.m. Saturday until the service at the church.
