| 7106 | Hi-- I saw your website on the Brassfields and thought I would contact you. One of my great-grandmothers was a Brassfield, and I don't know who her parents were. I thought maybe you might recognize her. Her name was Phoebe Brassfield, born according to the 1900 Census in April 1875 in Missouri. Other censuses place her birth a few years later. About 1903 she married an Edwin J. Bills, probably in Appanoose Co., Iowa. They had a bunch of kids, and lived in the Mystic, Appanoose Co., Iowa area. Her husband Edwin was a coal miner. I believe they are both buried in Appanoose Co., Iowa. There is a northern Missouri Brassfield family descending from a William Trammel Brassfield who had moved from Kentucky to Adair Co., Missouri ca. 1835. She is probably descended from him, but I don't know how. Do you know if she might connect to your Brassfield family? I can send more information about her descendants if you're interested. I noticed on your last e-mail that you had the incorrect e-mail address for R.J. Powell and that may be the reason you had not received a reply. I found Edwin J. Bills and Phoebe on the 1930 Federal Census in Walnut Township, Appanoose County, Iowa. It listed the following: Edwin age 59 Phoebe age 51 George age 26 (doesn't agree with birth date that you have of 8/17/1891 - see comments below) Earl age 23 Roy age 20 Elsie age 16 Grover age 14 There was no mention of the 2nd & 3rd children (Millard & Herman), who would have been 29 & 25, but George was still living at home. It also shows the age of first marriage for Edwin to be 26 and for Phoebe to be 21 - 5 years different, but their ages are shown as 8 years apart. It also shows that Edwin's father was born in West Virginia and mother born in Kansas. Phoebe's parents were both born in Missouri. The census also shows a Forest and Beulah Bill and family living close by. By the way, the Social Security records show a George Bills born 8/17/1892 (one year off) that died in Anita, Cass County, Iowa in June of 1974. There is however, a George E. Bills (of a more logical age) that was born on 5/20/1904 and died in Centerville, Appanoose County, Iowa on 3/27/1991 - are you sure that you have the correct George Bills? This one would seem to make more sense, given the age shown on the 1930 census and the Appanoose, Iowa connection. Keep me posted. Mike Michael D.
