8711 Merrick J. Wald C Private 9/2/1862 7/10/1865 This soldiers name was Merrick J. Wald who was a private in the 77th Illinois Company C. This photo along with a number of other like pictures came from the same album. The album has a purchase date of 1861 and was used to collect a number of Civil War CDV Carte de visite portraits. If you would like to see the album inside page All of the soldiers in the album were members of the 77th Illinois Infantry, Company C. However there are a couple from other companies in the 77th Illinois. Most even include a Inter. Rev. Two Cent Stamp which was a tax on photo s from 1861 to 1865 to finance the war on the Union Side.. This regiment was mustered in to the United States services Sept. 3, 1862 in Peoria IL in Woodford County and was mustered out on July 10, 1865 in Mobile. Most of these pictures were taken in New Orleans where the regiment was assigned to guard Rebel Prisoners in New Orleans between October 8, 1864 and February 20, 1865, The soldiers from the 77th Illinois Infantry had 'carte de visite' CDV photographs taken at Leeson's Photographic Gallery. These 2 1/2" x 4" cards were often exchanged between soldiers or sent home to loved ones. The Regiment then left New Orleans at that time for western Louisiana; marched up the Red River, driving the enemy until Sabine Cross Roads was reached, on the 8th of April 1864, where it meet the enemy in force. The 77th belonged to the division under Gen. Ransom, which was ordered forward to support the advanced calvary. Before the army could be brought forward to their support the whole rebel army came down on them and overwhelmed the whole division. In this engagement the 77th suffered terribly; Lieut. Col. Webb was killed instantly, besides 176 officers and men killed, wounded and made prisoners, leaving only 125 men in the regiment for duty. These pictures represent 10% of the remaining troops after this battle since almost all left the war alive. For additional information on the 77th Illinois Infantry WALD, Merrick J. (I3046)

8721 Michael ..

In case you don't remember me , and I would be surprised if you did, I am Buel Brasfield's son, one of Fayette's grandsons.
I have emailed you before about information concerning our side of the Brasfield legacy.
I wanted to let you know what I have discovered.
Sarah Snow's father is listed as Jesse Snow which, of course, is correct. Jesse's wife's name is Julie Vina Smith and her mother is Vina Franklin.
Many members of our family have a skin condition called Epidermalisist Bolosa, which causes blistering even with minor irratation. After tracing back to where this condition originated, we discovered it stems back to Vina Franklin.
Vina passed it to Julie ..
Julie to Sarah ..
Sarah to Buel ..
Buel to me ..
There are others that have it but I am just telling you my direct chain.
I am working on a family history congromeration for my kids so I'll be on this website quite often.
I hope this information is helpful.

8725 Michael, Hi. I am sorry if I am in any way bothering you. I have been scouring the web for information on my family on the internet now for about 8 months. I know very little about my family. What little I do know is about my grandfather. His name was Thomas Leonard Brasfield and he was born in Halls, Tennessee on March 18, 1921. The only other pieces of information I have is his social security number and the possible name of an uncle. Do you have any suggestions? Thank you in advance for any help, Jessica Brasfield Rhoads -- -- Jessica Rhoads American Restaurant Equipment/Cook At Home Appliances Factory-Direct New Equipment * Equipment Consultant http://www.i-are.com jessica@i-are.com Phone (321)-773-8382 Fax (321)-773-5889 916 Pinetree Drive Indian Harbour Beach, FL 32937 10/25/2001 Michael, Hi. Thank you for your response. The family members that have the social security number are refusing to give it up. What little information I have is that he was born in Halls, Tennessee March 18, 1921. He died somewhere between July 1965 and May 1966. There was some sort of family break which was said to be caused by an incident that caused him to have some medical problems. He was married at least twice. There was a Grand Ole Opry book with a picture of Rodney Brasfield and a notation on the side of the page that mentioned an Uncle Rod. It was a book that a member of the family sent to my mother. (My mother is searching for the book to get all of the information that was written on the page) With all the books she has in storage it should only take two or three years :) Thank you for any help that you can give!! 8734 Michael, I found your website on the Brasfield surname and I wanted to introduce myself. I am a descendant of Henry Lander and Nancy Brasfield of Christian County, KY through their daughter Catherine Ann Elizabeth Shipp Lander who married Atha Gregory Hudson. I found them in your database. I also have the books "Brasfield-Brassfield Genealogies" and "The History of the Lander Family of Virginia and Kentucky." If you think I may have any information you would be interested in, please let me know. Ginette - 10/24/2000 ****************** Mike, I'm glad you wrote back! Henry Lander was born Feb. 28, 1794 in Clark County, KY, the son of Henry Lander, Sr. and Letitia Strode. He died November 28, 1862 in Washington County, IL. He married Nancy Brasfield December 10, 1818 in Clark County, KY. Nancy was born in 1801 in Kentucky and died Abt. 1831 in Trigg County, KY. Catherine Ann Elizabeth Shipp Lander was born July 8, 1820 near Winchester, Clark County, KY. She died January 15, 1913 in Humansville, Polk County, MO. She married Atha Gregory Hudson July 11, 1835 in Memphis, TN. Atha Gregory Hudson was born November 25, 1813 in Halifax County, VA, the son of Daniel and Sally Hudson. He died November 27, 1912 in Humansville, Polk County, MO. They were married for over 75 years. Catherine Ann Elizabeth Shipp Lander was named after her aunt, Elizabeth Shipp Brasfield. I too have often wondered where Shipp came from? My line is: Edward Brasfield/Nancy Ann Emerson (how did you find her surname?) Wiley Roy Brasfield/Elizabeth Berry Nancy Brasfield/Henry Lander Catherine Lander/Atha Hudson Ophelia Kate Hudson/Cicero Berlin Warner Alice Purl Warner/Cecil H. Wiggins (my grandparents) I have a picture of Atha and Catherine if you are interested, plus stories of Wiley Roy Brasfield and Catherine Lander. Ginette 10/25/2000 ************************* Mike, Here is a little on the marriage of Atha and Catherine: From "History of the Lander Family of Virginia and Kentucky," David Lander Catherine Ann Elizabeth Shipp Lander was born near Winchester, Ky., July 8, 1820, and with all that name and the name of Hudson annexed later, she lived 92 years and a half! Her mother died when she was 11 years old. She was a beautiful girl and had many suitors, the most persistent of whom as A. G. Hudson, of Virginia, a saddler's apprentice at Hopkinsville, Ky. There is a bit of romance connected with their marriage. Her cousin, Martha Ann, was about to run away with Austin Benham, because her parents objected to the match. Martha requested Catherine Ann Elizabeth Shipp to accompany her. Without inquiring who would constitute the party and glad to have a joke on his brother, John S., Henry consented to Catherine's going. Alas for him, the joke was double-barreled. Mr. Hudson went along, unbeknown to Henry, and there was a double marriage at Memphis, Tenn., July 11, 1835. When the party returned, Wiley was the first of the family to hear what had happened, and thus he broke the news to his father, saying, "Pap, Kit's done got married"! Henry was furious. He bellowed around and pawed up the earth like a mad bull, and possibly at the instigation of the stepmother, he disinherited his child. Catherine's mother had previously given her a negro girl, and that was the extent of her dowry. The marriage was a happy one, however, and their diamond wedding anniversary was celebrated at Humansville, Mo. Mr. Hudson lived to be 99 years old and his wife 93. They had nine children. The story isn't quite accurate as in I have found that it wasn't Martha Ann and Austin Benham they went with. I don't know which of her cousins it was? The picture is of Atha Hudson, Catherine and their granddaughter, Ophelia Brown. 8736 Michael, My name is John Nofflett Brasfield. Son of Robert Edwin Brasfield and Ethel Rose Brasfield. Grandson of William Nofflett Brasfield and Effie L Maddox Brasfield. I was told by my parents and other family members that my grandfather was very proud of his middle name and was known by "Nof" Brasfield. That maybe the discrepancy in spelling. On my grandfather's tombstone and on my birth certificate it is spelled with the double f. If I can be of feather assistance please feel free to E-Mail me at Jbrasf2@charter.net

8737 Michael, I am looking for a John Massey who married Dicey Killingsworth 12 Oct 1810 in Johnston County, NC. The John I am looking for became involved in counterfeiting with Dicy's two brothers, John T. (a silversmith and gunsmith) and Freeman Killingsworth. Freeman was jailed Nov 1812. John Killingsworth and John Massey fled but were apprehended and jailed in Nov 1813. 1823, is the last document I have for John T and John Massey. They were being transported from the jail in Wake County to Johnston County. (Freeman had died in jail) I am assuming they may have served their time and were released as some researcher of the Killingsworth families say John T. Killingsworth moved to Nashville and opened a gun shop with one of his sons. Dicy did not stick around long as John T's wife had to identify her signature on papers in Johnston County, in Nov 1812. She may have gone with her brother and husband when they ran. I am trying to find if Dicy and John divorced and she remarried and is a Dicy Carlton (Cartton) I have found in Marshall County Tennessee in 1850. If any of this sounds like it could fit your John, son of Richard and Dorothy Unk. I would appreciate hearing from you. Thanks, Carol D. Monroe MASSEY, John (I33139)

After the conclusion of the obsequis the remains were taken to be sent to Knox County, Ill., the former home of the dead. Deceased was born June 11, 1806, in Highland Co., Ohio. He came to this county in 1874. Joined the M. E. church in 1843 of which he was a steadfast and consistent member up to the time when the great Father called him higher. Children and relatives and a host of friends mourn his taking off, butfind consolation in the fact that their loss is his eternal gain. )))) ((( Died, at his residence in Riverton, Fremont County, Iowa, Jan. 6th,1885, of Typhoid Pneumonia, Mr. George Boatman, aged 53 years and 20 days. His remains were consigned to the Riverton cemetery by the side of his little daughter, who preceded him about five years ago. He leaves a wife and one little boy, Frankie by name, aged seven years. Mr. Boatman was born in Highland County, Ohio, and came to this county about eight years ago, where he resided for about four years, from whence he removed to Riverton, where he remained until his death, working at the wagon-maker's trade until the day of his sickness, which lasted one week, during which time he was a great, though patient sufferer. He was converted and united with the M. E. Church about one year ago under the pastorate of Rev. E. E. Lymer, by whom his funeral sermon was preached from the very appropriate text " Like as a father pitieth his children, so the Lord pitieth them that fear him." He was greatly respected by all with whom he was acquainted, and died as he had lived with all men, in great peace. Thus passing over the swellings of the Jordan to join his little daughter on the shining banks beyond.)))) The dates for Henry would be : b. Jun. 11, 1806 and d. Mar 13, 1884. George's dates would be :b. Dec 17, 1831 and d. Jun. 6, 1885. It is hard for me , as an Ohio boy, to decide what newspapers these obits were in or any connections to the places in Iowa. I have: John William Boatman b. Jan 29, 1843 and d. Oct 11, 1924, married Mary Elizabeth Williamson, b. Oct 6, 1845 and d. Mar. 6, 1885. ( I think they were married in Knox County, IL)They had two boys: Archie Arthur, b. Aug 30, 1870 in IL and a Cyde Lee, b. Mar. 20, 1878. Cyde died Nov. 15, 1887 and (the story is) Archie took Clyde as a middle name to honor his deceased brother. All later references to Archie are: Archie Clde Boatman. In Archies obituary it says he was a native of Galesburg, Il. Archie married Gertrude Medora Huntington who was born in Wisconsin in 1874. They had a daughter: Ferne Huntington Baotman who was born in 1894 in Creston, Iowa. They eventually settled in Atlanta where both Archie and Medora are buried. Ferne married a Leonard Lamb and had several children including Mary Jane who is my wife's mother. My questions to you are: Do any of the people, locations, or dates ( particularly from the two obits) ring a bell??? Does the Creston, Iowa connection for Archie, Medora, and Ferne mean anything to you? Does the Huntington connection mean anything to you? I have a STRONG feeling that we are talking about the same family !!!!!! Your page on Rootsweb says 1831 for John's birth but... could that be incorrect? Any more info or insights would be greatly appreciated. Anxiously awaiting your reply....... Warmest regards to my wife's....... cousin???? Rick srbrewer@voyager.net BOATMAN, Henry (I21228)

8740 Michael, on William Leon Brassfield 8-12-1896 - 12-15-1967 1 - why is one child name withheld? 2 - why is spouse on James Albert withheld? Then on Rowena Carpenter - In searching in books named "Alabama Records" I found in Greene County in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery at the Cumberland Presbyterian Church near Lewiston a listing for Roeney wife of J. Brasfield d. May 12, 1844. Could this possibly be Rowena Carpenter who married John "Jackey" Brasfield? He married a second time January 2, 1847 to Rebecca Valentine in Greene County. This would fall into the time frame for them. Rowena's last baby, Levi, was born in 1843. Would like your input. Dorothy Brasfield dbras@bellsouth.net 7/21/2001 I found this information in some books at the Shreve Memorial Library in Shreveport, Louisiana. There are about 245 volumes "Alabama Records" and they include marriages, wills, deaths, cemetery, and etc. This information on Roeney was in volume 192, page 58. CARPENTER, Rowena (I718)

8741 Michael, was surfing and came across Nancy Kirk on your site. What bunch of Brassfields do you belong to? Nancy was my grandmother. One of her sons (E.O. (Eldie Orten) Brassfield) was my father. Given a little time I could get you part of the names, and dates. The Delameter she married after grandps Brassfield died (he was only in his 30's) was Al. Would have to find out his full name. (at my age getting forgetful) She had 3 sons, a daughter, and a son by her husband and sister. Al had 8 children at that time and she finished raising all of them. Took in washing to help with their income. One of her boys, Christopher married one of Al's daughters. They had 12 children. The,other brother Jess did not have children nor did her step-son Alvin. Alvan was a rodeo cowboy. Nancys daughter and her 2 little children died in the flu epedimic. This is probably more than you want to know, but if you are interested will send you more. I have always wondered where we came from originaly. Lucie Brassfield Martin. BRASSFIELD, Eldie Orten (I17127)

8742 Michael...
No problem. Yes, those are my parents. I think I've seen the "Brasfield Genealogy" book and posed the question (about grandma Bunn's middle name) to both my mother and my aunt. They both contend her name was Zenona. I have her marriage license to my grandfather and it lists her middle name as Genonia. I also think the "History of Monroe County" lists it as Senoma (with an 'm'). All I remember is that we heard her called Onie as we were growing up. I do not think I have any documentation with Zenona.

Just as a clarification, my father's real name was Bannie, he was named after a family friend Bannie Schumpert. And my mother's full name is Velma Ann Lovelace.

Be my guest with the pictures on my website.

Barry - Sorry to be a pest, but are you the son of Bennie & Velma Bunn? Also, the published "Brasfield Genealogy" book shows your grandmother as Martha Senona Brasfield. Middle name spelled with an "S" rather than a "Z", and nick names of Onie or Manonie. Before I change my files, I wanted to confirm that the middle name was spelled with a "Z". Thanks again. Also a favor to ask - may I have permission to download Martha's photo and use it on my web site with appropriate credit to you and your family web site? Mike

Michael...
Glad you received it ok.

Yes, I am related to him. My grandmother was Martha Z. Brasfield daughter of Lafayette Brasfield and Betty Massengale. She was one of Joe's sisters. She married William Rueben Bunn. If you're interested you could check out www.bunncrib.50megs.com
I have some pictures of her and William as well as the rest of the Bunns.

After reading the will, I see that it was for Joseph Arthur Brasfield who was born 9/18/1879. He married Ora Buelah Ausborn on 10/9/1900. Are you any relation? Thanks again.

8747 Michael: I picked up some of your family line for my cousin - don't believe
it was through any of your work (some from the Selph file. He's in TN and

look at all of your file right now. The following is from 'our' file. We
