| 9409 | New York Times November 12, 1883 Murdered by Notorious Characters Caldwell, Idaho. November 11th. - This camp was thrown into a feverish state of excitement at an early hour this morning by the discovery of the dead bodies of two men named Brassfield and Bryan in an unfinished hotel, with evidence about them that a life and death struggle had taken place. The men had sold a large stock of pelts and hides on Saturday, and were supposed to have had money on their persons, but had deposited all except $300, which, together with their personal property, was taken. The murders were committed by two notorious characters known as "Sage Brush Jack" and "Whistling Kid" with car coupling pins. The murdered men were sleeping in their blankets in the unfinished building, as all the lodging-houses were full. Both of the murders were captured late this evening, and threats of lynching were made, but the law will be allowed to take its course. ************************* Dear Mr Brasfield: Again, we thank you for your query of 30 June. Regrettably, our collection of Caldwell, Idaho, newspapers is missing the issue that may have covered the murder of your Brassfield, and the Idaho Statesman, Boise, Idaho, coverage of the same contained no more information than did your New York Times piece. We also find no word of a Brassfield in the 1880 federal census of Idaho. In the absence of a newspaper account which may have given us the full names of your Sage Brush Jack and Whistling Kid, we have no way of searching for prison records for the two of them. If you have not done so already, you may wish to contact the county recorder's office and the court clerk's office, Canyon County Courthouse, 1115 Albany Street, Caldwell ID 83605-3542, 208.454.7300 for additional, more local assistance. You may also wish to contact Family Scanner Chapter, IGS, P O Box 581, Caldwell ID 83605. We re sorry we cannot be the bearers of more positive news. We re always disappointed when we cannot find the records patrons seek. If we may be of any additional service either now or in the future please do not hesitate to contact us. | 9419 | Nicole - I am back home now and have had a chance to check my material. Aaron Brasfield (1910 - 1983) of Gonzales, Gonzales County, Texas turned up in a search of Social Security records (459-07-5961). I added him to the "family file" even though I don't know anything about him or his ancestry or descendents. I do this quite often with "unknowns" in hopes of finding a lead later on. I would love to add additional information if you are willing to share it. Is there anything I can offer to assist you? Mike Michael D. I have located a number of African-American Brasfield family members over the last several years, as well as some that have been researching same. Aaron Brasfield, Sr. was my maternal grandfather. I have been researching the Brasfield family off and on for several years. However, I have never been able to find any more African-American Brasfields. All of the ones that I have contacted, or came across, have been White. I would appreciate it if you could contact me at your earliest convenience. Thanks, Nicole James | BRASFIELD, Aaron (I34728)
