| 9504 | Not married - S.Sgt. in USAAF - 8th AF, 388th BG Shot Down and KIA returning from 25th mission - Awarded DFC, Purple Heart Staff Sergeant Harold Adrian Brassfield. This photo was taken in late Feb/early March 1944, just a few days before he was killed in action on a mission to Berlin, March 6, 1944. The photo was taken at Knettishall, England home to his 388th BG of the 8th AF. Harold was awarded the following medals: Distinguished Flying Cross (for his actions of March 6, 1944) Air Medal w/ three Oak Leaf Clusters Purple Heart along with several other battle ribbons and lesser medals. A couple of points of historic interest: *The March 6, 1944 mission was the largest single day loss in 8th AF history. 69 aircraft went down. *At the time of his death , 25 missions were required to complete a tour and rotate back the the states. Harold was returning from his 25th mission when he was shot down. *Four of the 10 crewmen on his crew were KIA when the aircraft exploded. The rest parchuted safely to the ground in Holland and were POW's for the rest of the war. *From the time Harold left is Harlan Co, Kentucky on Dec. 7th, 1942, he was stationed in Florida, Utah, Oregon, Washington and perhaps a couple other places.. but he never again returned home. He never got a leave, and to my knowledge never saw Kentucky again. His plane was a B-17 Flying Fortress named "Blitzing Betsy". He was tail gunner. ******************************* Harold Adrian Brassfield Staff Sergeant Born: 1 June 1923 - Gatliff, Whitley Co., Kentucky Years of Service: 7 December 1942 - 6 March 1944 Branch of Service: USAAF Unit: 388th Bomb Group (Heavy) - 562nd Bomb Squadron - 8th Air Force Decorations: Distinguished Flying Cross, Air Medal w/3 OLC, Purple Heart S/Sgt. Harold A. Brassfield, "Ad" to his friends, was a tail gunner on a B-17 Flying Fortress named "Blitzing Betsy." At the time he served with the 8th AF, it was required that a crew member fly 25 missions to complete his tour. S/Sgt. Brassfield flew his 25th mission on 6 March 1944, which fate had was the first full scale U.S. raid on the German capital of Berlin. S/Sgt. Brassfield and his crew made it to Berlin and dropped their bombs suffering some minor anti aircraft damage. On the return trip to England, "Blitzing Betsy" was attacked by German fighters, set afire which led to a collision with another B-17, and then exploded. During this time S/Sgt. Brassfield reported shooting down a German fighter and immediately being seriously wounded. He was unable to bail out of the spinning, burning B-17 and perished with 3 of his fellow crewmates, one of which probably sacrificed his chance to escape to instead go tend to S/Sgt. Brassfield's wounds. Harold Brassfield was 20 years old. S/Sgt. Brassfield was buried wth great reverence by Dutch citizens who risked the wrath of their Nazi occupiers to see that S/Sgt. Brassfield and his three crewmates got a proper Christian burial. The original burial location was at Nieuw Dordrecht, Holland. After the war S/Sgt. Brassfield was brought back to Whitley Co. and buried in Williamsburg at Highland Park. I would be interested in hearing from anyone at all who knew Harold Brassfield during his youth in Whitley and Harlan Counties. I know he had a girlfriend named Betty or Betsy (hence the name "Blitzing Betsy on his plane.. several of the crew had Betty or Betsy's for girlfriends/wives), who I believe attended Cumberland College. I'd love to know what happened to her. | BRASSFIELD, Harold Adrian (I32484)

Bull Frog Valley was named after and old Indian , whom the government allowed to finish out his life there, instead of making him move on to Oklahoma . | 9517 | Notes for Elizabeth Brassfield: Dennis Trammell served with a James Brassfield, who may have been related to Elizabeth Brassfield (in-law if she was a widow or kin if Brassfield was her maiden name). Elizabeth was older then Dennis. Proposed Change: BRASFIELD Elizabeth (I2981) Tree: Brasfield-Brassfield Genealogies Link: http://www.brasfield.net/getperson.php?personID=I2981&tree=1000 Description: You are showing the wife of Dennis Trammell (b. ca. 1759) as "Elizabeth Brassfield," but records indicate she was Elizabeth (maiden name unknown) Brassfield. At the time she married Dennis she was known as "the widow Brassfield." She had been married to a man named Brassfield, had at least two children by him (Milly & Tom), then he passed away, and then she married Dennis Trammell and had four more children (James, Nancy, Peter & David). The act of calling her simply "Elizabeth Brassfield" has been perpetuated all over the internet and has created a multitude of incorrect listings. If you have any documentation showing otherwise, I would greatly appreciate hearing from you. Thanks very much. Sincerely, John John C. | 9519 | Notes for JOHN BRASSFIELD: John Brassfield moved from Arkansas to Hoyt, Indian Territory, about 1882 where he lived until 1884, at which time he removed to Eufaula, Indian Territory. Here, six miles due east of Eufaula, Oklahoma, is located the Brassfield Cemetery where he, his wile and his kin are buried. Here, on the Canadian River, he and his descendants operated the Brassfield Ferry until it was swept away in the overflow of 1906. In 1890 John moved to Brooken, Indian Territory, where he purchased a general merchandise store from J.C. Belt. ***************************************** Searcy County, Ar Query Forum http://genconnect.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Ar/Searcy/599 Brassfield connection Posted by Phyllis Kimbro Cata` Surname: Brassfield I was wondering around on the internet looking for the county of Harrison, Arkansas. Then got off on Searcy Co. and found your note. YES, we tie in. And here is how. Your Sarah I. Treat who married John Brassfield. My Gr. Gr. Grandfather was Sedrick Perry Brassfield, son of Abner Brassfield and Lucinda GEE, he was born June 19, 1838, Grundy Co., MO.; died September 10, 1909 in Fame, McIntosh Co., Oklahoma (near Eufaula where the Large man-made lake was made). Sedrick Perry and his Wife Matilda (GEE) Brassfield are buried in the Fame, McIntosh Co., Ok. cemetery and it is on the internet. Their son, my Great Grandfather General Sheridan Brassfied (General was a real first name for him)...is buried beside them, Sedrick's name is listed as S. P. Brassfield and General Sheridan's is listed as G. S. Brassfield, and Matilda is as Matilda Brassfield. Sedrick Perry Brassfield first married a (1) wife Polly Smith in Arkansas, but they had no children and if they did it died in childbirth when she died. He then married Matilda (GEE), my line. Polly Smith Brassfield died in 1858 or 1859 in Newton Co., Arkansas leaving no heirs. Marriage to Matilda Gee was June 3, 1860 in Newton Co., Ark. by J. A. Week, J. P. Matilda was born ca. 1846 in Missouri. Sedrick Perry Brassfield enlisted as Pvt. Copany C, 1st Regt. Ark. Vo.l. Inf. Feb. 11, 1863, Fayettevile, Ark. (Union forces); discharged August 10, 1865 (Certificate No. 2533720) he lived in 1855-to 1891 in Newton Co., Ark.; once lvied in Marion Co. Arkansas; lived in Indian Territory and I have a record that shows he and family arrived in Indian Territory March 4, 1890, it shows he lived in Hughes Co., Oklahoma and in 1891; lived in Indian Territory, Eufaula Creek Dist. No. 12, in 1904; lived in Hanna, Hughes Co., Ok.. in 1908. The Census of 1870 shows one John S. Brassfield age 9 years born in Ark. .iving in the household of Sedrick Perry Brassfield. The Pension Papers of Sedrick did not list a son named John S. Brassfield. Bible and family papers were lost when the home of Sedrick Perry Brassfield was destroyed by fire Jan. 28 1909. This is my line above....now I will back up and tell you where John Brassfield and Sarah I. (Belle) Treat fit in. Going back to the parents of this John Brassfield you mention and my Sedrick Perry Brassfield, they were brothers, they were the sons of : Abner Brassfield B. ca. 1808 in Chattanooga, Tn. He died after 1870 probably in Arkansas and probably in Searcy Co., Arkansas, I'm not sure here. He is probably the Abner that lived in Newton Co., Ark. in 1850 and 1870 and took amnesty oath June 4, 1865 at Clarksville, Ark. The 1840 Census show them in Polk Co., Mo. He bought land from Elizabeth Nancy GEE in Grundy Co., MO Sept. 17, 1848, Deed Bk C, p. 192 Grundy Co., Mo. He married Lucinda "Cinderella) GEE Brassfield before 1829 probably in Arkansas, she was B. ca 1812 or 1817 in Tennessee and is buried in Ark. probably Searcy Co., Ark. Abner Brassfield B. 1808 and Lucinda "Cinderella" GEE Brassfield had the following children of which your John Brassfield and my Sedrick Perry are two of them. They all are as follows: I will post any note for u, pls look for it. | BRASSFIELD, John S (I15803)

| 9527 | Notes from Betty Watson's mother or aunt: "Hugh Hughes was marred the first time to the daughter of the owner of Hendre Cennin farm where he lived for many years as a farmer. There were four children born to this union whe we have no record of. Several Years later after Hugh Hughes wife died, he married the second time to Anne Jones in 1854. Anne Jones was the daughter of Margaret Roberts, sister of the eminant misister of Wales - namely - Ther Rev. Robert Roberts of Clynog, No. Wales, The Rev. John Roberts of Llaveven whose son was the noted Rev. Michael Roberts of Pullheli, Nor. Wales. Margaret Roberts died soon after the birth of her daughter, Anne Jones, so Anne Jones was raised by her grandfather and grandmother at the farm Bryn (Hill) Bychan (small). It was necessary for Anne Jones to earn a living for herself as her father had remarried. Anne Jones was first cousin to Mr. J.W. Jones, former editor of "Y Drych" (The Mirror), a Welsh paper still being published in Utica, N.Y." Another reference: http://www.rootsweb.com/~nyunywh/oneidawelsh/index.html | HUGHES, Hugh (I36247)
